“We have to distrust each other. It is our only defence against betrayal.”
A word by the director
I have embarked on this project certain that this is quality theatre and that I will find inexhaustible abundance of possibility to explore the characters, situations and eternal themes. Broadly speaking, this is a story about individuals struggling to survive in a society without mercy at the moment when all the options have been removed. The people closest to the one in need do not offer a helping hand. On the contrary, they solve the problem by rejecting the materialistically and psychologically lapsed person. In no time, an individual can end up on the street, and when this happens, not even those close to him/her have any mercy for the underdog. They ruthlessly cast him/her away.
Since this is such a good piece of writing, I have easily disregarded all the things that belong to the old dramaturgy, and have found contemporary people we know and recognise in the play’s characters. This drama deals with the themes such as: family violence, abuse of women, and poverty – both material and spiritual, which are still very present in our society, and will, unfortunately, remain so probably forever. This society does not recognise beauty, fragility, spirituality, but rejects them and dooms them to failure.
Apart from all this, the characters of the play also have these deep, dark, and subconscious erotic desires and complexities.
